Cellulitis means infection of the skin tissue. This infection is usually caused by a bacterium called Staphylococcus aureus. Infection usually happens through a breach in the continuity of the skin as in cuts and wounds. It is seen more commonly in hospitals. Individuals with diabetes and weak immune systems are prone to develop Cellulitis.
Cellulitis presents with classical symptoms of redness, heat, swelling and pain in the affected part. It may also give rise to high fever.Antibiotics are usually effective in the treatment of Cellulitis. However, what matters most is a hygienic lifestyle. Wounds should be kept clean and bandages changed frequently to avoid contracting the infection.
Immediate medical attention should be sought because Cellulitis spreads very rapidly and can be life threatening.
